Welcome to the new academic year!
Our Lady and St Joseph Primary School

Overview

Our curriculum at OLSJ is based on the Early Years Framework and the National curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2. It is designed to provide a broad and balanced education to meet the needs of all children. Our well planned curriculum, along with high quality teaching, ensures that children are given opportunities to develop as inquisitive and independent learners.

Our curriculum promotes respect for ourselves, each other, and other cultures. We endeavour to ensure that our curriculum is inclusive, diverse and representative of our communityWe strive to achieve high standards academically whilst ensuring that the spiritual and moral development of our pupils is at the centre of our curriculum.

We believe that reading and oracy are fundamental to language acquisition and educational success. We prioritise the teaching of reading through our phonics programme, daily supported reading and the development of our new library space.

In addition to the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, we also provide a wide range of opportunities, activities, trips and events to further enhance and enrich the experiences of our pupils. Alongside regular music and art lessons, pupils also have the opportunity to work with specialist art and music teachers on various themed projects; our most recent being a collaborative art and music Amazon Rainforest project. We recognise the importance of cultural capital in the development of pupil knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them to be successful in society, their career and the world of work. Whole school events such as World of Work Week and Cultural Diversity Week further support and enhance pupils’ wider development. We also offer a wide range of after-school clubs.

We have high expectations for behaviour and we aim to develop learners who are motivated, resilient, and reflective.

Our vision at OLSJ is reflected in our school motto ‘Shine with love, kind and respect.’
